Have you ever wondered why you chose roses as a hobby from the wide range of other garden plants? It would seem to make some sense that there is an architectural inheritance on a genetic level that marks us as rose lovers from birth. However, such an inheritance does not always manifest itself until adulthood and only then after a contact with a rose show, followed by membership of a local rose society. Then your hobby suddenly begins to collimate all you energy and you are now growing and showing roses. Needless to say, your collection of varieties also takes a giant leap and one day you realise the lawn has gone and you grow nothing else but roses except a few spring bulbs, which can be underplanted. Attending meetings of local rose societies you find a diverse range of backgrounds and professions. The brain surgeon sits next to the truck driver and they are the best of friends discussing roses. Attendance is elevated to district and national shows. The hobby has taken over and you enjoy the camaraderie, and all that comes from making new friends with a common interest. The hobby brings many rewards from sharing the knowledge and one day you find yourself preaching to others. Some people have experienced the rose growing hobby to much fuller extent than others. However, the challenge is to reflect for a moment that rose growing tends to catch you in a sort of whirlwind activity and before you realise it you are travelling all over the country. |
